Linear means having to do with a line. For example, a linear equation is an equation that makes a line when graphed.
| Object | Description |
|---|---|
| Linear equation | An equation that, when graphed, makes a line. |
| An equation that can be written in the form y = mx + b, or x = a. | |
| For linear systems with more than two variables, an equation that can be written in the form y = a0 + a1x1 + a2x2 + a3x3 + … + anxn | |
| Linear function | A function where all the terms are first degree. |
| A function for which it is true that 1) f(x) + f(y) = f(x + y), and 2) f(αx) = αf(x). | |
| Linear system | A set of linear equations that, when taken together are either all true or all false. |
| Linear algebra | The study of linear systems. |
| Linear regression | Fitting a linear equation to a data set. |
