A decimal number is a real number expressed in base 10 that may or may not have a decimal point.[2]

32.67 where 32 is the whole part and 67 is the decimal part.

A decimal number has a whole part and a decimal part. In the number 32.67, 32 is the whole part and 67 is the decimal part. The whole part is always to the left of the decimal point. The decimal part is always to the right of the decimal point.

Place Values

For decimals, the place values are in multiples of ten. Take the number style="color:red;">427.

  • The digit 7 is in the one's place.
  • The digit 2 is in the ten's place. (1×10 = 10)
  • The digit 4 is in the hundred's place. (10×10 = 100)

Now take the number 427.56.

  • The digit 5 is in the tenths place. (1 ÷ 10 = 1/10)
  • The digit 6 is in the hundredths place. (1/10 ÷ 10 = 1/100)
