To evaluate an
expression,
values are substituted for
variables,
and the expression is
simplified.[2]
Example 1
Evaluate 3 + 2x when
x = 5. |
3 + 2 · 5 |
Use the substitution property of equality to substitute
5 for x |
3 + 10 |
Simplify the multiplication. 2·5 = 10. |
13 |
Simplify the addition. 3 + 10 = 13. |
