Evaluate

Pronunciation: /ɪˈvæl.juˌeɪt/ Explain

To evaluate an expression, values are substituted for variables, and the expression is simplified.[2]

Example 1
Evaluate 3 + 2x when x = 5.
3 + 2 · 5 Use the substitution property of equality to substitute 5 for x
3 + 10 Simplify the multiplication. 2·5 = 10.
13 Simplify the addition. 3 + 10 = 13.
